On Tuesday 16 June 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia left the official cash rate unchanged at 4.35%. After three increases earlier this year – in February, March and May – the pause gives many borrowers their first breather in months. If you have a mortgage, here is what the decision could mean for your home loan interest rates and the choices in front of you.
What happened
The RBA board held steady at its June meeting, citing still-elevated inflation and global uncertainty. The hold pauses a run of three consecutive hikes between February and May. Commentary from the major banks is now split on what comes next: CommBank, NAB and ANZ each expect the next move to be a cut, though not until 2027, while Westpac has flagged the possibility of further increases later in 2026. In short, the direction of rates from here is far from settled.
One related data point stood out. A recent Canstar survey of almost 2,900 homeowners found 52% had never switched home loan providers, and another 31% had not switched in the past two years.
What this means for you
A pause in the cash rate does not mean your own rate is as low as it could be. Lenders price loans differently, and a rate that was competitive a few years ago may now sit well above newer offers. Canstar’s modelling gives an illustration: an owner-occupier on a variable rate of around 6.98% with a $600,000 balance and 25 years remaining could reduce repayments by roughly $10,700 over two years by moving to a rate under 6%, even after about $1,150 in switching costs. That figure depends on your balance, rate, loan term and lender criteria, so it is an example rather than a promise.
The practical takeaway: a steady cash rate is a good moment to check what you are actually paying. A quick home loan review can show whether your current rate is still competitive or whether refinancing could help – subject to your individual situation and lender approval.
